My dog panics at nail time. Will this be different?

What he reacts to is not there: no squeeze on the nail, no snap by his face, no single cut that can go too deep. Let him hear it across the room first, then try one nail. If he still will not have it within 90 days, we refund you.

How quiet is it, really?

It hums rather than whines, and speed 1 is the quietest setting, which is where you start. It is not silent, and no grinder is. We will print a decibel figure only after we have measured our own unit.

Does the light work on black nails?

Not through the nail, and no light does. On white or clear nails you can see the pink quick. On black nails the LEDs light the cut face while you grind: when a small dark dot shows in the middle, you stop.

What if it stops working?

If the motor, battery, charging or lights stop working within 12 months, we send you a replacement. Message us with your order number, that is all we need.

Why nail day turns into a fight

Three things happen in one squeeze of a clipper. The first is the quick: every nail has a living core of blood vessel and nerve inside it. On a white nail you can see it as a pink shadow. On a black nail you cannot, so every cut is a guess, and one guess too deep hurts and bleeds. The second is the crush: a clipper squeezes the nail before the blade gets through, and your dog feels that pressure even when you cut in exactly the right place. The third is the snap, a sudden crack right next to his face.

Do that sixteen times and a dog learns that a hand on his paw means something bad is about to happen. That is not him being dramatic. It is him paying attention.

What the grinder does instead

It sands the nail down instead of cutting it. A diamond drum spins inside a guard. You touch the nail to it for a second or two, lift, and look. Each touch takes off a sliver, so there is never one big moment that can go wrong. Nothing squeezes the nail and nothing snaps.

Two LEDs next to the drum light up the nail tip while you work, so you are not squinting at a paw in a dim hallway. The motor hums rather than whines, and it has three speeds, so you start on the gentlest one.

What the light shows, and what it does not

On white or clear nails, the light makes the pink quick easy to see, so you can stop well short of it.

On black nails, no light shines through to the quick, ours included, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. What the light shows you there is the end of the nail as you go. The cut face looks chalky and dry. When a small dark dot appears in the middle of it, you are close. Stop there. Because the grinder only ever takes a sliver, you see that dot coming instead of finding it with a blade.

What changes, honestly

Most dogs are not fans of their first session with anything near their paws. What changes is that nothing sudden happens: no squeeze, no snap, no guess. Keep sessions short, one paw is plenty, and many dogs settle over a few tries. Some take longer. If yours will not settle with it within 90 days, we refund you, and there is nothing to send back.

Care

Brush the nail dust out of the port after each session and put the dust cap back on. Do not rinse it under a tap. When the drum stops biting and only polishes, pull it off and push a new one on.

What it is not

It is not a clipper, and it will not take a long nail back in one go. It does not detect the quick: the lights help you see, the stopping is still yours. It is not a substitute for a vet if a nail is split, bleeding or infected, or if your dog is in pain when you touch his feet.

Why nail day goes wrong

Clippers make you commit. This lets you stop.

One squeeze of a clipper is a crush, a snap and a guess about where the quick is. The quick is the living core of the nail, and on a dark nail you cannot see it. The grinder sands instead of cutting: you touch the nail to the drum for a second or two, lift, look, and take another sliver. There is never one big moment that can go wrong.

What the light shows, and what it does not

Two lights on the tip, so you can see where to stop

Two LEDs sit next to the drum and light the nail tip while you work, so you are not squinting at a paw in a dim hallway. On white or clear nails they make the pink quick easy to see, so you stop well short of it. No light shines through a fully black nail, ours included. There the LEDs light the cut face: it looks chalky and dry, and when a small dark dot shows in the middle, you are close, so you stop.

What is inside

Why this grinder, not just any grinder

Quiet on its own is not enough if you still cannot see where to stop. This one does both, and keeps it simple.

  • Two LEDs at the tip

They light the nail you are working on and switch on with their own button, so you can use them in any room.

  • A hum on speed 1

The motor hums rather than whines. Speed 1 is the quietest, and it is where every session starts.

  • 3 ports, 3 speeds

Small, medium and large port caps, and three speeds, from toy breeds to thick big-dog nails.

  • USB rechargeable

Charge it from any USB charger. The display shows the battery left and warns you before it runs low.

How it works

Nail day, in three steps

Short sessions, a sliver at a time, and you stop when the nail shows you.

  1. A black Labrador resting on his bed next to the nail grinder

Step 1: Let him meet it first

Switch it on at speed 1 with the lights on, a few feet away, and hand over a treat. Then touch it to his paw with the motor off. For a nervous dog, that is the whole first session, and that is fine.

  2. Man grinding a small Maltese dog's nail on his lap with the LED nail grinder

Step 2: A sliver, then look

Hold one toe between your thumb and finger. Put the nail tip in the port that fits, touch it to the drum for a second or two, lift and look. On a light nail, stop well short of the pink. On a dark nail, stop when a small dark dot shows in the middle of the cut face.

  3. Owner on the sofa holding her dog's paw while grinding one nail with the LED nail grinder

    Step 3: Short and often

One paw per session is plenty. Round off the sharp edge last. A light pass every week or two keeps nails short with less work each time than one big monthly session.

Your first week with it

Slow is fast here. A dog who meets it calmly on day one is a dog you can do all four paws on by the end of the week.

  1. Day 1

    Meet it, no nails

Switch it on at speed 1 with the lights on, a few feet away, and hand over a treat. Then touch it to his paw with the motor off. That is the whole session.

  2. Day 2

    One nail

Hold one toe between your thumb and finger, a second or two on the drum, lift and look. Treat, and stop there.

  3. Day 3

    One paw

Four or five nails, short touches, a look after each one. Round off the sharp edge last.

  4. Day 7

    All four paws

If he is relaxed, do the rest. If not, stay at one paw per session. There is no rush.

  5. After that

A light pass every week or two

Little and often keeps nails short with less work each time than one big monthly session.

Every dog is different. Many settle over a few short tries, some take longer, and that is what the 90 days are for.

Safe habits, from the first session

  • Keep long hair away from the drum

Hold it back, or push the paw through a piece of old nylon stocking so only the nail pokes out.

  • A second or two per touch

Do not hold the drum on one nail, because friction warms the nail. Short touches, then look.

  • If you nick the quick

Press styptic powder or cornstarch on it for a minute. It is why we go a sliver at a time.

  • Swap a worn drum

When the drum stops biting and only polishes, pull it straight off and push a new one on.

No light shows the quick inside a fully black nail, ours included. On dark nails everyone works the same way: take a little, look at the cut face, stop at the dark dot. A grinder just makes that slow enough to see coming.

Before you ask

The eight things people actually want to know, answered with the limits printed on.

Will the light show the quick on my dog's black nails?

No, and please be wary of anyone who says theirs does. No light shines through a fully black nail. On white or clear nails the LEDs make the pink quick easy to see. On black nails they light up the end of the nail while you grind: the cut face looks chalky and dry, and when a small dark dot appears in the middle, you are close, so you stop. The grinder only takes a sliver at a time, which is what lets you see that dot coming.

My dog panics at the clippers. Why would this be any different?

Because the things he is reacting to are not there: no squeeze on the nail, no snap, and no single cut that can go too deep. It still makes a sound and a light vibration, so build up to it: switched on across the room first, then near his paw, then one nail. Treats help. If he still will not accept it within 90 days, we refund you and you do not have to send it back.

How quiet is it?

It hums rather than whines, and speed 1 is the quietest setting, which is where you start. It is not silent, and no grinder is. We will print a decibel figure only after we have measured it on our own unit.

Will it get through a big dog's thick nails?

Yes, it just takes a little longer. Use the large port and speed 2 or 3, and do two or three short touches per nail instead of one long press. Pressing harder does not make it faster, it only warms the nail.

How often should I use it?

Little and often. A light pass every week or two is easier on both of you than a big session once a month, because each session only has to take off a little. If you can hear his nails clicking on a hard floor, they are due.

How long does a drum last, and can I get more?

It depends on how many dogs you have, how big their nails are and how often you grind. When the drum stops biting and only polishes, swap it: it pulls straight off and a new one pushes on. The Grinder + 4 Spare Drums pack gives you four spares for $10 more than the grinder on its own.

How do I charge it, and how long does a charge last?

Plug the included cable into any USB charger or a laptop. The display shows how much battery is left and warns you when it is low, so you are not caught halfway through a paw.

What if it stops working, or my dog just will not have it?

For 90 days from delivery, if it is simply not for you or your dog, message us and we refund you. Used is fine and there is nothing to ship back. And if the motor, battery, charging or lights stop working within 12 months, we send you a replacement. Shipping is free in the US and most orders arrive in 6 to 14 days.

Still wondering about something? Ask us

90 days to see if he will have it

Give it a few short sessions. If 90 days after it arrives your dog still will not settle with it, or it is simply not for you, message us and we refund you.

Used is fine. There is nothing to ship back: a used nail grinder is no good to anyone else and the postage would cost more than it is worth.

And if the motor, battery, charging or lights stop working within 12 months, we send you a replacement.

  • 90 days, counted from the day it is delivered
  • Used is fine. Nothing to ship back.
  • Stops working within 12 months? We replace it.
  • We issue the refund within 2 business days of your message.
